J'ouvert 2027

What it is

J'ouvert (from the French "jour ouvert", day break) is how Trinidad Carnival officially opens. On Carnival Monday morning, 8 February 2027, the streets of Port of Spain fill from around 4am with people covered in mud, paint, oil and powder, chipping and dancing behind music trucks and rhythm sections until well after sunrise.

It is the rawest, most democratic part of Carnival. There are no feathers or sequins here. Some people play in organised J'ouvert bands with a theme and a truck; others come for ole mas, the satirical costumes and placards that poke fun at politicians and the news of the year. In the early hours the J'ouvert King and Queen competition runs on South Quay, where Richard Montano and Laverne Smith retained their titles in 2026 with comic, topical portrayals.

What to expect

Expect to get dirty, very dirty, and to have strangers splash paint on you as part of the fun. Bands move slowly, the music is loud, and the crowd is shoulder to shoulder at the busiest corners. As dawn breaks the vibe gets even sweeter, and by mid-morning most bands wind down so masqueraders can wash off and rest before Monday mas.

Expect a visible police presence. In 2026 police warned that anyone found with weapons at J'ouvert would likely be arrested and kept out of the rest of Carnival, and a ban on glass bottles (outside licensed alcohol traders) was in force.

Tips for first-timers

• Wear old clothes and closed shoes you can bin afterwards, and put your phone in a waterproof pouch.
• Carry ID and a little cash in a zipped pocket, and agree on a meeting point with your friends.
• Rub a layer of baby oil or petroleum jelly on skin and hair beforehand so the paint comes off more easily.
• Exact times vary by band. Check your band's start point and departure time closer to the date.
