How to think about location
Carnival happens on foot. On J'ouvert morning and on Carnival Monday and Tuesday (8 and 9 February 2027), the bands take over Port of Spain, and cars become more of a problem than a help.1 So the best place to stay is somewhere you can walk from, or a short, reliable ride away from, the Queen's Park Savannah and the downtown streets.
The good news: most of the city's hotels and guesthouses sit in a ring of neighbourhoods around the Savannah. The national tourism board keeps a directory of accommodation across Trinidad, which is a good place to start checking addresses.2 We keep a shorter list of places with official websites in our plan your trip listings.
Woodbrook
Woodbrook is the classic Carnival base. It sits just west of downtown and is home to Ariapita Avenue, a strip lined with restaurants and bars that the tourism board highlights for dining.3 You will find guesthouses, small apartment buildings and bed and breakfasts here rather than big hotels.2 Expect noise during Carnival season: that is part of the appeal.
St Clair
St Clair is a leafy, mostly residential neighbourhood on the western side of the Savannah. The Kapok Hotel on Cotton Hill, a locally owned 95-room hotel, describes itself as within safe walking distance of the Queen's Park Savannah.4 St Clair suits people who want to be close to the action but sleep somewhere calmer.
St Ann's
North of the Savannah, St Ann's climbs into the hills. It has several established hotels, including The Chancellor Hotel on St Ann's Avenue and Hotel Normandie on Nook Avenue, as well as Alicia's Palace on Lady Chancellor Road.2,5,6 It is quieter than Woodbrook, still close to the Savannah, and a good choice for families or anyone who needs real sleep between fetes.
Maraval
Maraval runs up a valley north of St Clair, along the road that leads over the hills to Maracas Bay. It feels more suburban, with guesthouses and villas.2 It is convenient for a beach day, but plan your Carnival transport carefully because you will usually need a ride into town.
St James
St James, west of Woodbrook along the Western Main Road, has a lively evening street life. Small inns such as Culture Crossroads Inn on Delhi Street put you in the middle of it.2 It is a good budget-friendly base if you do not mind a bit of bustle.
Downtown and the waterfront
The large international hotels sit on or near the waterfront and at the edge of the city centre. The Hyatt Regency Trinidad and the Radisson are both on Wrightson Road, the Courtyard by Marriott is at Invaders Bay on the Audrey Jeffers Highway, and the Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre is on Lady Young Road.2 These are the easiest places to book with hotel loyalty points.
Be aware that the UK government advises caution in parts of downtown Port of Spain, particularly east of Charlotte Street, south and west of Piccadilly Street and north of Independence Square, as well as in the interior of the Queen's Park Savannah.7 Stay alert, take taxis at night and ask your hotel which streets to avoid.
Chaguaramas
Chaguaramas, on the peninsula west of the city, is the yachting hub of Trinidad. CrewsInn Hotel sits beside its own marina and boatyard.8 It is scenic and relaxed, but it is a drive from the parade, so it works best for a pre- or post-Carnival stay rather than the big weekend.
Piarco and Trincity
Near the airport, the Regent Star Hotel on BWIA Boulevard in Piarco and the Holiday Inn Express in Trincity are handy for a first or last night around a red-eye flight.2,9 For Carnival itself, move into town.
Booking advice
- Book early. Well-located rooms go quickly in Carnival season. Once you have picked your band, book your bed.
- Ask about minimum stays and payment terms. Carnival rates and conditions often differ from the rest of the year, so read the cancellation policy before paying a deposit.
- Check the taxes. The tourism board lists VAT at 12.5 percent, a 10 percent hotel tax and a 10 percent service charge, so confirm whether a quote includes them.10
- Check security for villas and rentals. The UK government advises that villas, especially in isolated areas, should have adequate security such as outside lighting, grilles and overnight guards.7
- Map your mornings. J'ouvert starts before dawn, and you will want a short, safe route to your band's meeting point. Check the Trinidad Carnival 2027 dates before you fix your nights, and read our Trinidad Carnival safety tips for getting home after fetes.
