Who she is
Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez grew up surrounded by soca greatness: her father is the legend Superblue (Austin Lyons). She started out in school performances and made her soca debut at 21, and she has spoken about how hard it was, especially as a woman, to step out of her father's shadow.1
She did it emphatically. Today she is one half of soca's First Couple with her husband Bunji Garlin, whom she married in 2006. Together they manage the Viking Band and other businesses, and she has worked behind the scenes too, organising and producing an International Soca Monarch show in 2019.1 Music runs right through the family: her sister Terri Lyons was Calypso Monarch in 2020 and won the crown again in 2026 with "Blessings".1,2
Signature sound and key songs
Fay-Ann's music is high-octane power soca built around a commanding voice and total control of a crowd. She is also a serious writer and producer. When Bunji's "Hard Fete" won the 2023 Road March, her name was on the entry form as well: she is credited as co-writer and co-executive producer of the song.1
She is still contending on the road. Her "Road Meeting" was among the songs that registered plays at the 2025 Road March judging points.3
Carnival legacy
Fay-Ann won the Road March in 2003, 2008 and 2009.1 Her 2009 Carnival is the stuff of legend. On Soca Monarch night she won the International Soca Monarch with "Meet Super Blue" while heavily pregnant, beating her own husband, who placed second with "Clear De Road". The same night she also took the Groovy Soca Monarch title with "Heavy T Bumpa", silencing critics who had said she could not compete while expecting a baby.1
